August 2024 Newsletter
It's August! There are still lots of sunny days left for some summer adventures. Whether you're going to the cottage for the weekend, taking a road trip to visit some family, or venturing abroad, traveling for seniors can present some unique challenges, especially in the summer. To stay safe and healthy, follow these tips to enjoy your trip to the fullest.
Plan Ahead. What will the weather be like? How will you be getting around? Are your accommodations and planned activities mobility-friendly? Are there medical facilities and pharmacies nearby? Avoid places with extreme temperatures or locations that are too remote. You want to be comfortable and have access to medical aid in case of emergencies.
Stay Hydrated. Drink plenty of water in the summer heat and avoid excessive caffeine and alcohol as they can contribute to dehydration.
Stay Cool and Protected. Summer heat can be dangerous. Wear light, loose clothing, a wide-brimmed hat, sunglasses and use sun protection.
Maintain a Balanced Diet. This can be challenging when travelling, and wanting to indulge while on holiday is tempting. Keep your digestion on track by choosing nutritious snacks, avoid skipping meals and be cautious of new foods.
Physical Activity. During long journeys, take regular breaks to stand up, stretch, and move around to prevent stiffness and improve circulation. If you are doing a lot of walking, make sure to stretch and take time to rest. Don't overdo it.
Medication Management. Before traveling, consult with your pharmacist to ensure you have enough medication for the duration of your trip, and plan for a few extra days in case of delays. Always travel with your medication in the original packaging. Store your meds in a cool, dry place. Some medications require refrigeration, so plan accordingly if you need to bring a cooler.
Travel Vaccines. Depending on your destination, certain vaccines are recommended, or even required, and proof of vaccination may be needed to enter that country. Verify the entry requirements of your destination, and consult with your healthcare provider and pharmacist for which travel vaccines you may need (Hepatitis A or B, Typhoid, Yellow Fever, etc)
Prepare for Emergencies. Bring a list of medications, emergency contacts, and medical conditions and allergies you have. Familiarize yourself with nearby hospitals and pharmacies so you know where to go. Make sure you have comprehensive travel insurance and take the time to understand the policy to know what is covered and what is not.
Traveling can be a wonderful experience, offering opportunities to create new memories and explore new places. By planning ahead and following these tips, you can enjoy a healthy, safe, and stress-free trip. Bon Voyage!
