As heat waves become more frequent and intense in Atlantic Canada, it's crucial to pay extra attention to how these rising temperatures can affect our health, especially for seniors.  Extreme heat can affect medications and the way our bodies respond to them. At Pharmacy For Life, we're committed to helping you keep yourself and your loved ones safe and healthy all summer long.

Dehydration: Some common medications like hydrochlorothiazide or furosemide (“fluid pills” that are used to treat fluid retention and/or high blood pressure) can increase fluid loss, potentially leading to dehydration. Watch for the signs of dehydration that include dry mouth, dizziness, confusion, or decreased urination. Make sure to drink plenty of fluids, especially water, throughout the day.

Heat Sensitivity: Certain medications, like metoprolol for heart conditions, or olanzapine for mental health, can make you more sensitive to the heat. This could lead to heat exhaustion or heat stroke. Keep an eye out for signs of overheating, stay hydrated and stay in cool, shaded areas during the hottest parts of the day.

Medication Storage: Did you know that heat and humidity can degrade certain medications like insulin or nitroglycerin, making them less effective? Store medications in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and heat sources.  Also, be mindful when transporting medications that require refrigeration (i.e use a cooler or a cooler bag).

Sun Sensitivity: Some medications like doxycycline (an antibiotic) or ibuprofen (an anti-inflammatory/pain reliever), can increase sensitivity to the sun, leading to sunburn or rashes. If you plan to be out in the sun, especially while taking these medications, remember to wear sunscreen, wear hats/protective clothing, and stay in the shade.

Health Conditions: It's also crucial to be aware of how heat can affect existing health conditions. For example, those with heart disease, diabetes, or respiratory problems may be more vulnerable to heat-related complications and should take extra precautions when the weather is hot.

Pharmacy For Life Can Help: Our pharmacists are medication experts and can provide personalized advice on how to manage your medications safely during the summer, or any time of the year!
